Many recorded firsts have been attributed to the conductor Dr. Frieder Weissmann. All Nine Beethoven Symphonies, Respighi: Fountains of Rome, and the Tchaikovsky: 6th Symphony to name just a few. Before 1933 when Weissmann left Germany, it was estimated that he had made as many as 4000 records. How ironic such an accomplishment would today nearly be totally forgotten. Many myths surround Dr. Weissmann who was born either in Frankfurt-am-Main or Langen, Germany, either 1893 (likely) or in 1898. He conducted the Berlin Staatsoper (1920-25), in Munster, Konigsberg and Dresden (1927-31). He guest conducted the Concertgebouw and Berlin Philharmonic 1931-33. From 34-37 he was at Teatro Colon, in Cincinnati and New York from 1934 -37. In the following years, until about 1947 he was associated with RCA Victor records in the US and was responsible for conducting many of the great singers of that era. He remained somewhat active as a guest conductor in the post-war era but his busy recording career wound down. Conducting in Cincinnati, New York, San Francisco, London (Philharmonic), the Concertgebouw and in Florence, Italy (a Mahler cycle which he did in the 1970's). However, his greatest contribution remains as a staff conductor for German Parlophon and Odeon (starting in 1920) during the transition from acoustic to electric recordings and until 1933. The Tchaikovsky1812 Overture (possibly the first on disc) shows what impact the early recordings can still deliver. Disc two concludes with a rare taped interview with Dr. Weissmann who reveals some of his amazing life and legacy. Tales of acoustic recording techniques, stories of Lauritz Melchior and other great singers, life in early Nazi Germany, an amusing encounter with Leopold Stokowski, Mayor La Guardia and more. Weissmann saw it all and lived nine decades.

Otto Ackermann was born in 1909 in Bucharest. He became a Swiss citizen and was director of the Bern and from 1948 1953 the Zurich Opera House. His reputation as a conductor was made through his recordings with EMI, especially in London, Paris and Vienna. His recordings of Lehar and Johann Strauss operettas with Elisabeth Schwartzkopf, many with the Philharmonia Orchestra, are especially noteworthy. During the 1950's, he was active conducting broadcasts with the South West German Radio (and other German Orchestras), the Zurich Tonhalle and Netherlands Radio. He made a number of recordings for EMI, Decca, Concert Hall, and International Recordings Guild. He died in 1960 during his post as director of the Cologne Opera (1953-1960).

RENE LEIBOWITZ the EARLY ULTRA-HIGH-FIDELITY LP'S

Rene Leibowitz (1913-1975) came to Paris from Poland in 1926. A student of both Schoenberg and Webern, he emerged as a very important conductor in France after the war. He did not record that extensively but most of his records were highly praised. He maintains a cult status for many experienced collectors. This CD features two very early important LP Hi-Fi firsts. Berlioz: Lelio written in 1832 as sequel to the Symphonie Fantastique. Based on Shakespeare's Tempest. It has a vivid narrative and the Leibowitz version is very passionate and heroic.
Brahms finished his unusually large dramatic cantata Rinaldo in 1869 while studying the works of Wagner. It is based on Goethe's 1811 work about adventures of the brave knight. It concludes with a dramatic ship voyage and Rinaldo's victory during the Crusades. This version remains definitive.

Rene Leibowitz (1913-1975) venuto a Parigi dalla Polonia in 1926. Un allievo sia di Schoenberg che di Webern, emerso come conduttore molto importante in Francia dopo la guerra. The very rarely recorded E flat Major concerto was written by Beethoven at the age of 14. This version has undergone extensive revision by Rene Leibowitz, who, in addition to re-orchestrating the entire work has written the cadenzas at the end of the first and last movements. This is followed by one of the Five numbered concertos Beethoven wrote, the Second. The Second concerto, opus 19 was written in 1795 when the composer was 25. Although it carries the opus number 19, it was actually written before what is known today as the First concerto in C opus 15. So on this CD you are actually hearing the first and second piano concertos ever written by Beethoven! The disc concludes with the seldom heard 12 German Dances of Beethoven written in 1795, they have no opus number.
The distinguished and highly regarded (yet, seldom recorded) pianist Paul Jacobs performs in one of his rarest recordings. These performances date from 1953.

Andre Cluytens (1905-67) & Louis Fourestier (1892-1976) were of that generation of mature French conductors who were at their peak during the mono LP era. Cluytens even continued into the early stereo era under EMI. Les Erinnyes is for De Lisle's drama based on Greek Mythology. This is the only complete recorded version of this rich and powerful orchestral suite. Written in 1872 by Massenet, it consists of 7 sections which revolve about the character of Elektra. Equally evocative is the Suite Algerienne from 1881 by Saint Saens, it concludes with the famed French Military March. This CD concludes with several works by Chabrier including the seldom recorded Habanera, and Felix Mott's arranged version of Bourre Fantasque, the version of A La Musique with soloists, chorus and orchestra, the rousing Gwendoline Overture and the ever popular Joyeuse Marche.

Selmar Meyrowitz and Julius Pruwer

The First complete 78 rpm recording of the Liszt: Faust Symphony and possibly the first electrical recording of the Liszt: Piano Concerto #1... Performed by the very youthful Alexander Brailowski

Selmar Meyrowitz (died 1941) and Julius Pruwer (died 1943 ) were both born in 1875 and their lives both ended during WW II , fleeing Nazi persecution. Pruwer was born in Austria, knew Brahms and studied conducting under Richter. He recorded with the Berlin Philharmonic for Polydor from 1924-33. In 1933 he left for Russia (where he had conducted the first performance of Tristan and Isolde in 1898), he later emigrated to New York where he died in virtual obscurity. Meyerowitz was born in East Prussia, he studied with Reinecke and became assistant to Mottl who took him to the Metropolitan Opera in 1900. He was appointed director of the Berlin Staatsoper (1924-33), when he had to flee to Paris. He recorded for Columbia, this distinguished first complete recording of the Liszt: Faust Symphony. He died in Paris in 1941.

Hans Rosbaud was born in 1895 in Gratz, Austria and died in 1963. After studying at the Frankfurt conservatory he became a conductor who championed contemporary music. He held several posts in Germany before he was appointed principal conductor of the South-West German Radio Orchestra in 1948. In 1952, he took charge of the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra. He became legendary for his Mahler and Bruckner performances as well as a Mozart opera conductor (at the Aix-en Provance festivals). A man of broad talents, one of his hobbies was the study of nuclear phyiscs! His recorded performances were few but treasured.

Hans Rosbaud è stato sopportato in 1895 in Gratz, Austria ed è morto in 1963. Dopo avere studiato al conservatory de Francoforte è diventato un conduttore che ha sostenuto la musica contemporanea. Ha tenuto parecchi alberini in Germania prima che fosse nominato conduttore principale dell' orchestra radiofonica tedesca di sud-ovest in 1948. In 1952, ha preso la carica dell' orchestra de Zurigo Tonhalle. A Leo Blech TRIBUTE

Leo Blech (1871-1958) conducted a 2600 opera performances at the Berlin "Lindenoper" from 1906 till 1954. Blech had studied under Humperdinck and was recommended for his position by Richard Strauss. It is a tribute to the enormous prestige of Blech that, although Jewish, he was able to continue conducting at the Berlin State as late as 1937 in the face of severe Nazi hostility. While in Riga he was advised not to return to Germany. During the war, he conducted in Stockholm. He returned to Berlin as chief conductor of the Municipal Opera in 1948 until retirement in 1954. He recorded many performances with the worlds greatest singers and instrumentalists (like Fritz Kreisler) during the 1920's and 30's. A greatly beloved conductor.

The Earliest Wagner in early Hi-Fi PROGRAM

The Polonia Overture dates from 1832. The subject for the overture concerned the unsuccessful Polish revolt of 1831 against Russia. Many Polish sought refuge in Germany after the crushed revolt and Wagner had befriended some of the oppressed Poles. Wagner wrote his only symphony in 1832 and it was performed in Leipzig in 1833. The score was lost for many years and was finally again performed again on Christmas 1882 with Wagner and Humperdinck each conducting two movements. Das Feen was Wagner's first opera, the overture was performed in 1834. The opera is based on 'La Donna Serpente' by Gozzi. In 1836 Wagner wrote 'Das Liebesverbot' as his second opera, based on Shakespeare's 'Measure for Measure'. Rienzi was premiered in Dresden in October, 1842.

Arthur Balsam and Josef Hoffman

We present a true rarity as the distinguished Polish violinist Bronislaw Gimpel (a student of Flesch and Huberman) conducts the famed Polish born pianist Artur Balsam in 1952 performances recorded in true high fidelity sound. Balsam began as accompanist to Menuhin in 1932. He performed with the NBC Symphony and other great U.S. and European orchestras of the era. Almost none of his recordings are still available. In addition the CD contains legendary broadcasts by Josef Hofmann from 1939 and 1940. These performances were issued on a limited edition LP during the late 1950's shortly after Hoffmann's death in 1957 and the sound is quite good. The Balsam performances date from a rare LP on a small label from the very early 1950's.

Gluck wrote his charming and festive cantata in 1767 shortly after his Orfeo. It honors the birth of a child to the Grand Duchess of Tuscany and it was performed just once in Florence during the composers lifetime. What a delight to hear the joyous work again. Weber wrote his heroic battle cantata in 1815 to celebrate the victory at Waterloo. The work features actual battle music and trumpet calls not unlike Beethoven's Wellington Victory.This work looks forward to both Berlioz and Liszt in the best sense of the romantic 'program' music. The premiere was in Prague on December 15, 1815 and the intitial reception and reviews of the time were rapturous. It is a treasure to have this only version of the complete cantata now on CD. This 1862 work is the earliest Bruckner wrote for orchestra. Despite the fact they sound more like Schumann than Bruckner, there is good compositional skill and they conclude with a charming march.

Robert Heger cond. Beethoven, Mozart + Wagner bonus

 

The legend of fine conductor Robert Heger, remains alive today mostly because of the series of fine stereo recordings he made of German operas on Angel/EMI during the early 1960's. Heger was one of the finest lyrical conductors of opera in a rich, mellow style reminiscent of a Bruno Walter or Clemens Krauss. Heger was born in Strasbourg in 1886. He conducted the Berlin State Opera (1933-45) and made a series of legendary opera performances some of which were issued on LP by BASF. He died in 1978.
The Beethoven: Jena symphony was found in the archives of the Academic Concerts at Jena in 1909. There were a number of corrections in the score found in Beethoven's own hand. The Namensfeier "Names Day" Overture was written in 1814 and performed in Vienna. It celebrates the birthday of the Austrian Emperor. Consecration of the House Overture was written in 1822.
The CD concludes with two of the best known works by Mozart and Wagner.

When Herbert Von Karajan died in Anif on July 16, 1989, a door closed forever on a style of Germanic conducting. Born in Salzburg in 1908, Karajan was heir apparent to the greatest German conductor of the 20th Century. In 1954 Furtwangler died only Karajan remained positioned to carry tradition on. His career took off in 1938 when he conducted Tristan at the Berlin Opera and also the Berlin Philharmonic for the first times. He remained in Nazi Germany throughout the war years. After a period of "de-Nazification," his career resumed in a big way after 1948. His attitude towards discipline, his power and conducting style are missed in today's world. He ruled like a despot. You have a unique opportunity to hear Karajan, at the height of his powers, in the mid-1970's proving to any doubters, the validity of his way with German music. None of these performances are from Europe and have been archived for over a quarter of a century. Despite some audience noise, the Stereo sound is astonishing and the performances far more compelling than Karajan ever did in any recorded sessions. Transfers direct from the only in-house master tapes.
