Jean Martinon

JEAN MARTINON January 11, 1910 - to- March 1, 1976.
Student with Vincent d' Indy, Albert Roussel, Charles Munch and Roger Desormière. Studies began in 1928 at the Academy of Paris. Prisoner of war of 1940-1942, Martinon spent 2 years in a German stalag. He directed the Concerts of the Academy (1944-1946), then the Orchestra Lamoureux (1951-1957), London Philarmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of Tel-Aviv (1958), those of Dublin, of Belfast, etc...; Martinon was appointed General manager of the Music in Düsseldorf in 1960. He reached his greatest status and triumph when he was appointed appointed director the Chicago Symphony from 1964 to 1969. Perhaps too much French music programming lead to his replacement by Sir Georg Solti. He returned to Europe and was named in 1968 Director of the Orchestra of the ORTF, and in 1974 Director of the Orchestra of the Residence of the Hague. Jean MARTINON was a leading conductor of the French music, his recordings prove it: Berlioz, Massenet, Bizet, Lalo, Saint-Saëns, Debussy, Ibert, Dukas, Poulenc, Pierné, Franck, Ravel, Schmitt, and Roussel. For non-French music, he had a flair for Mahler and Nielsen. Like Monteux and Munch (his conducting mentor, along with Desormière), Martinon had a deep and abiding love for the Austro-German. Bernard Jacombson, an eminent British critic who is not given to overstatement, wrote that the Brahms First Symphony he heard Martinon conduct in Chicago in April 1968 was the greatest performance of that work he had heard since Furtwängler (of whom Jacobson, like Martinon, was a fervent admirer). His musical style has a width and strength and it is a reflected art, not timid but it is kept in check from too much aggressiveness.

JEAN MARTINON 11 gennaio 1910 - a 1 marzo 1976.
